How Century Label Helped Three Clients Adjust to COVID-19

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread around the globe, it has left many niche businesses struggling in its wake. While the worst affected have had to close their doors completely, others have seized on some rather unique opportunities to pivot to another product or another sector entirely. The most successful of these have found a way to produce the products we need the most of during the pandemic.

Here’s a look at how three different Century Label clients recently adjusted their business models to produce hand sanitizer in the wake of COVID-19:

Creating Better Days

Primarily a creator of CBD-infused wellness products including oils, gummies, and tinctures, Creating Better Days adapted its business model to include a brand new company called APEX Offense. According to owner Taryn L. Nahm, “My 7-year-old daughter has cold-induced asthma, I was terrified of COVID affecting her lungs. If she got the virus, we would end up in the NICU. I desperately searched for hand sanitizer and was sickened at the price gouging.”

Along the way, however, Nahm found that her internal label printer was unable to meet the high demand and short timeline caused by these unique circumstances. Fortunately, Century Label was able to help; “The team at Century Label got us proofs within hours, we secured our order and got it within days. Their timeliness and efficiency were greatly appreciated. We were able to keep on our production schedule with their assistance—allowing us to produce more and quicker without any delays.”

Enfusia

While Enfusia was built to produce a range of bath and body products focused on the incorporation of essential oils, vitamins, and botanical extracts, it, too, pivoted to sanitizer production during COVID-19. “We are NSF-Certified and FDA registered, and we knew at some point the FDA would give waivers to companies like ours to assist in bridging the gap,” says Debra Myers of Enfusia. That gave the company the initial push to begin producing sanitizer and maintain production despite limitations in supplies caused by the surge in product demand.

Through the initial and continued challenges, Myers mentioned that the easiest part of her company’s pivot has been the branding and labeling of the new sanitizer product thanks to Century Label. “They have really been great, getting labels out the door so we can get products on the shelves. We've had a decades long relationship with Century Label, but it's in the tough times you know who your real suppliers are. They are right here with us!”

CK Products

As a large distributor and manufacturer of cake decorating, candy making, and kitchen tools and accessories, CK Products hardly seems like an ideal company to make the pivot to medical-grade sanitizers. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, that’s exactly what CK Products did. According to John Steadman, “The current economy created capacity in our production schedule. CK wanted to retain employees and fill a need that would help fight the spread of COVID-19.”

The transition needed to be rapid to address diminishing sanitizer supplies. “In just a few weeks we had secured supply of the main ingredients, created packaging, and brought on new customers.” He attributes much of the quick turnaround to Century Label’s speedy labeling process: “Century Label helped CK by getting our label orders first in line so we could keep moving quickly.”

How Being a Leader in Labels Just Became an Essential Business

While most of us haven't yet begun to imagine the ways in which our world will change in the days after the COVID-19 pandemic, one thing is for certain: nothing will ever seem the same afterwards. While many businesses are experiencing shutdowns during this global crisis, Century Label is fortunate enough to be able to step up in a leadership role and aid in this battle against the novel coronavirus. In fact, the increased and desperate need for hand sanitizers and disinfectants means that our FDA and EPA-compliant labels are more crucial now than ever before.

Hand Sanitizer

While hand sanitizer used to be primarily a tool of medical professionals, its use has been steadily on the rise in use for the last 10 years. Today, in light of this global pandemic, we see a very different picture altogether. The first week of March, after news of COVID-19 hit the general public in full force, saw a 470% increase in hand sanitizer sales compared to the previous year.

Both the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have recommended high-alcohol-content hand sanitizers of more than 60% alcohol as an alternative to handwashing when soap and water are not available. It is one of the most effective ways to kill the virus and avoid its spread. Ensuring proper labeling of alcohol content is crucial to the fight against this virus.

While most of us in the United State have on-demand access to soap and hot water, there are many circumstances where we may need a hand sanitizer alternative. Here are some of the top reasons that we see such a need for increase in hand sanitizer use in the COVID-19 era:

  • Essential workers who don't have time to wash hands while doing their jobs

  • When shopping for essentials

  • During worship

  • In our vehicles

  • On public transportation

With so many stores in our communities experiencing shortages of this life-saving product, the ramping up of the production of hand sanitizers is essential in keeping us all safe.

Hard Surface Disinfectants

Hard surface disinfectants are another important weapon against COVID-19, and not just in hospitals and grocery stores, but in our homes, as well. Studies of the virus have shown that it can live on some hard surfaces, not just for hours, but days.

For this reason, both the WHO and the CDC recommend that disinfecting countertops, tables, doorknobs, handles, and floors become paramount, as part of our daily routine now. Fortunately, with proper disinfectants, the coronavirus is easy to kill.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused countless economic upheavals throughout the world. Many companies have adapted their manufacturing processes to assist in the production of sanitary products and medical supplies to support the healthcare industry in this time of crisis.

One of the most amazing developments is the trend among distilleries and alcoholic beverage manufacturers across the United States shifting gears to produce hand sanitizer due to the extreme shortage our nation is facing.

If your distillery wants to contribute to the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, keep a few things in mind. First, the hand sanitizer your distillery produces is unlikely to meet all applicable regulations and manufacturing standards held by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

However, the FDA has promised not to take legal action against manufacturers who strive to contribute to the fight against the virus as long as they do so responsibly. Labeling is one of the most important things to consider if you wish to shift your business operations toward hand sanitizer production.

Why Is Labeling Important?

While you may wish to turn your company’s focus toward contributing to relief efforts, remember that you have a responsibility as a manufacturer to produce safe, effective, and accurately represented products. If the hand sanitizer you produce does not meet all standard regulations for hand sanitizer production, you must inform consumers of this fact on your label.

It’s also essential to list every ingredient used in the production of your new hand sanitizer so consumers can make informed purchasing decisions. The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a suggested formula for creating hand sanitizer. It’s strongly recommended that any distilleries or other manufacturers that wish to contribute to the fight against COVID-19 in this manner follow the suggested formula as closely as possible.

Developing Your Hand Sanitizer Label

The same basic rules apply for creating hand sanitizer labels as for any other type of consumer product. Your label should include the weight and volume of the package as well as a comprehensive list of ingredients. Some people are allergic to isopropyl alcohol, so if you use the WHO-approved formula that includes isopropyl alcohol, consumers need to be aware of this to avoid allergic reactions. While rare, it is also possible for an individual to have an allergic reaction to glycerol or hydrogen peroxide, two other ingredients listed in the WHO-approved formulas for hand sanitizer production.

Your label should clearly display your brand logo and all required information. Work with an established labeling service to produce high-quality, readable labels for your hand sanitizer as quickly as possible.

Adapting Your Business to the Ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has dramatically altered everyday life for many Americans. As countless people reshuffle their daily schedules, work from home, and manage kids home from closed schools, businesses across the country are stepping up in several incredible ways.

In addition to school districts offering free meals to families in need and restaurants shifting to purely takeout services, distilleries in the US are shifting gears and creating hand sanitizer from the alcohol they have on-hand and giving it away for free. While this is a noble effort, it is important for both distilleries and the public to know that hand sanitizer produced in this manner may be somewhat effective, it may not meet applicable regulations. Although, most distilleries are following a recommended recipe by the World Health Organization.

A More Sensible Solution Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

While it’s honorable of alcohol-producing companies to strive to contribute toward emergency relief efforts across the country, it may be more realistic for these establishments to shift their focus toward making their own sanitation products that meet applicable standards. The average craft beer distillery may not possess the equipment and materials required to produce sanitary products that meet all applicable regulations. Those that can properly prepare hand sanitizer for consumers and health care professionals will not have to worry about the FDA taking action against them during this epidemic.

Alcohol distilleries in Atlanta, Portland, rural Georgia, and North Carolina are shifting their operations in an effort to provide the public with the sanitation products they need to slow the spread of COVID-19. Labeling is an important consideration for this effort, so if you think your business can contribute to the fight against the spread of the coronavirus, keep a few things in mind. All hands on deck.

The Importance of Labeling for Distilleries and Craft Beer Brewers During the Crisis

First, your labels will need to indicate the ingredients used in the production of your hand sanitizer and other products, and it will also need to indicate that the product has not been fully reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration and other relevant government agencies. It is essential for businesses to refrain from making unfounded claims about their products, especially during a crisis situation like this.

Take time to ensure your labels are accurate, represent the new product you have made in a concise, readable, and truthful way, and provide consumers with all the information they need to make an informed decision about using your product. Manufacturers must continue to hold to their responsibility to provide their customers with safe, effective, and accurately labeled products for the duration of the pandemic.

If you have questions about labeling new sanitation products or want to develop new labels for your products, contact Century Label. We continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and will follow all applicable guidance from the government as we continue to serve our customers to the best of our ability.
