Century Label Picks Up 2020 Gold Ink Award

Printing Impressions magazine has recognized Century Label’s Hella Cocktail Co. Premium Cocktail Mixers label as a Pewter Award winner in the 2020 Gold Ink Awards, Digital Printing, Labels & Packaging category. It was the fourth time in as many years that Century received this recognition.

The attractive, vintage-inspired design gave the product a bold look that stood out on a shelf and was completely unique—while retaining brand integrity.

This year’s Gold Ink Award winners were chosen among more than 400 entries submitted within 43 different categories. Winning pieces were chosen based on print quality, technical difficulty and overall visual effect.

Is Your Brand Due for a Label Redesign? Consider Pressure Sensitive Labels

Unprecedented times have presented unique product and labeling opportunities.

As your company has played the hand that COVID-19 has dealt, you’ve had to adapt and change many procedures to help curb the spread of the coronavirus. Custom printed labels may not seem like a very influential component of flattening the curve, but they can have an extremely positive impact on your sales and brand recognition.

One of the ways you can improve your packaging and sales is to redesign your labels. Pressure sensitive labels are an ideal way to promote your brand and refocus on the safety and compassion that reflect the current, unprescedented market changes.

What are Custom Printed Pressure Sensitive Labels?

Pressure sensitive labels are printed and manufactured with the adhesive on the face stock when your sheet or roll of labels arrives. They are available in varieties to fit specific needs, such as easy release, wet or cold conditions, permanent seal, and re-sealable.

Consider these key reasons to order new pressure sensitive labels for your products.

  1. Market Changes. Labeling regulations set by agencies like the Food and Drug Administration are often modified to provide better protection for consumers. Situations like the current pandemic are one reason that these changes occur. Other factors like climate change bring attention to environmentally friendly products and labeling, as well.

  2. Fresh Look. One of the most effective ways to ensure that your product stands out is to update your packaging and labeling to stay relevant and fresh. With new labels, you can improve your brand image and include any relevant information related to COVID-19 and labeling for special events and holidays.

  3. New Product Lines. If you have recently added new products to your brand, it is a great time to use new pressure sensitive labels to grab customers’ attention. Utilizing techniques like color-coding your product labels improves your brand consistency and draws attention to new products.

  4. Express Your Mission. Over time, your brand message may have changed to include new processes, services, or product improvements. New labels are a great way to refine your message and show your customers what you represent.

If you have been trying to evolve with the times and provide a product that customers know is safe and compliant with the necessary guidelines brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, new labeling is the perfect solution to gaining more business.

Launching a Private Label CBD Product

Launching-a-Private-Label-CBD-Product.jpg

Given how competitive the CBD industry has become in recent years, it’s easy for entrepreneurs to feel as though they’ve missed the boat. However, in spite of the market’s saturation, there’s still plenty of opportunity for new brands to get in on the action. Time is certainly of the essence, but with a little research, persistence and creativity, you’ve got a fair shot at cashing in on the expanding cannabinoid boom.

The first thing to understand if you’re considering launching your own CBD product line is that the industry is no longer a Wild West of retail. Gone are the days when companies could get CBD products on the shelves with little or no laboratory testing. Due to increasingly stringent FDA regulations, you have to be extremely vigilant in the production, labeling and marketing of your CBD; otherwise you could wind up on the wrong end of a class action lawsuit.

The next thing to understand is that, unless you have really deep pockets and significant botanical expertise, you’re probably not going to be manufacturing your own CBD. Few individuals have the means to set up their own private production facility and laboratory. For the vast majority of cannabinoid start-ups, the best option is to sell private label CBD products, also known as white label CBD products.

What is a private label CBD product?

If you start a private label CBD brand, you’ll be getting your products from a supplier rather than manufacturing them yourself. Taking this route enables you to access a sophisticated independent lab without paying through the nose. Suppliers have all the necessary knowledge, experience and equipment to develop first-rate products that are both natural and safe—the top two qualities consumers have in mind when shopping for CBD.

Using a CBD supplier doesn’t mean surrendering control over your product. On the contrary, a good supplier will manufacture the product with your input and specifications in mind. In addition to saving you money, this also saves you time, allowing you to concentrate more of your energy on marketing your CBD so that it stands out from the competition.

These days there’s no shortage of private label CBD suppliers to choose from. Cope Online is an example of a trusted and reliable company. Of course, not all suppliers are created equal and you need to exercise care when choosing one to develop your company’s product line.

Finding a supplier

The first point to consider is transparency. A good supplier won’t keep anything a secret from you; that includes detailed information on their production facilities, harvesting and manufacturing processes, and testing procedures. If a supplier is reluctant to provide these particulars, or if they aren’t readily available to address your questions and concerns, you should look elsewhere.

Don’t settle for a supplier that manufactures a limited assortment of products. You want your supplier to be versatile and have the capacity to develop an array of products for you to experiment with. Additionally, they should have the flexibility to tailor products specifically for your brand.

Moreover, a good supplier will be able to tell you exactly why they deserve to be entrusted with the work of developing your product. What sets them apart from their competitors? How successful are their other clients? These are critical questions to which the right supplier will have the answers.

Building your brand and complying with requirements

Once you decide on a supplier, the next step is designing your brand in a way that appeals to consumers. This is easier said than done, of course, particularly when you’re dealing with a market crowded with high-quality products as the CBD market currently is. Success here depends on creativity and originality, plus an ability to maximize the potential benefits of social media and SEO. That’s for you to figure out.

As we alluded to above, CBD products are strictly regulated by the FDA. You are required, for example, to include certain information on all of your product labels. It’s crucial that you understand and comply fully with these requirements, as the FDA has demonstrated that it has no qualms about imposing harsh penalties “non-compliant” brands. The last thing you want is for your private label CBD company to go under before it even gets off the ground.

Are You Aware of These 5 Medical Marijuana Labeling Trends?

The legal marijuana market has been rapidly growing for years and shows no signs of slowing down. The global market is expected to exceed $55 billion by 2025. Cannabis is no longer a niche market, but one that appeals to an increasingly large and varied audience. As regulations continue to evolve and more consumers become interested in cannabis products, companies need to ensure their packaging is innovative and interesting, as well as provide necessary product and dosage information.

RELATED ARTICLE: 3 Tips for Boosting Your Marketing Strategy with Custom Labels

The following current trends in medical marijuana labeling can elevate your product to the next level.

High-Tech Advances

The cannabis market has dramatically expanded in the last several years to include oils for vaporization, edible goods, pills, lotions, and other types of products that require specific packaging. A Colorado-based company called Functional Remedies has developed a line of CBD products using lipid extraction to fully utilize the entire hemp plant, including tinctures, salves, and capsules.

Another new trend comes from CannaStrips, a company that has developed a cannabis strip that dissolves under the tongue.

Environmentally Friendly

Cannabis is marketed as an all-natural remedy, so many companies have focused on eco-friendly packaging to promote an environmentally conscious image. This packaging is often composed of sustainable materials, including hemp, cotton, and colored glass, which extends the potency of products by filtering UV light. Design methods can incorporate tree-free or recycled paper, plant-based inks and dyes, biodegradable adhesive, PLA film, and techniques like etching or embossing.

Health-Focused

To appeal to health-conscious consumers, companies are implementing the use of medical terminology and symbols in package design. Consumers want transparency, so they can determine the specific cannabis strain, its intended effects, the proper dosage, and whether it is meant to be used recreationally or medicinally. Prevent your labeling from coming across as sterile by accentuating the natural aspect of these products, using earth tones, verdant imagery, and terms like “organic” and “raw.”

Style and Minimalism

Ensure your product stands out from the competition by developing a label that exudes style, class, and luxury. Knowledgeable, professional consumers want sophisticated, contemporary designs with high-quality graphics. A minimalist approach is popular, including clean lines, geometric forms, and graceful typography. Compared to psychedelic designs of the past, today’s more discerning consumers prefer more subdued color palettes and geometric shapes.

Humorous Marketing

As a nod to its counterculture past, the packaging designs for cannabis products are employing puns and wordplay to embrace and poke fun at the common misconceptions associated with cannabis use. Edgier brands are putting their unique spins on the symbols and imagery traditionally associated with the taboo reputation of cannabis. Illustrate the newly relaxed attitude toward cannabis by including words like “baked” or “munchies” on your labels.

Over the past several years, essential oils have become increasingly more popular with consumers around the world. In fact, the global market size of essential oils was estimated at over $17 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach $33 billion by 2027. Essential oils are dominating the market in a number of industries due to an increasing awareness of the benefits provided by natural, environmentally friendly ingredients.

From pharmaceuticals to home cleaning and health and beauty, consumers desire products they can feel good about using. This growing demand for natural, organic products has drastically increased the availability of essential oils on the market. So, how do you make sure your essential oil products stand out from the competition on the shelves?

Consumers primarily rely on packaging when making their purchasing decisions, so first impressions are crucial. Invest in high-quality custom labels that demand attention and clearly communicate product information.

  1. Choose attractive, personalized labels. Enhance the shelf appeal of your product with striking customized labels that promote your brand. 2. Include clear, concise product information. Essential oils come from a variety of sources and may be used for many purposes, from ingestion to inhalation in aroma diffusers and topical application for skin and hair care. To make sure consumers are choosing the appropriate products, it is imperative that your labels feature simple, precise instructions about their ingredients and intended uses.

  3. Make sure labels perfectly fit your essential oil containers. Even the most attractive, well-designed labels will fall short of expectations if they do not properly fit the product containers. Our shrink sleeve labels are perfect for essential oil packaging, as they conform precisely to the shape of any glass, plastic, or metal containers. Avoid a “Tide Pod Challenge”—Make Your Product Attractive to the Right Audience

Avoid-a-Tide-Pod-Challenge-Make-Your-Product-Attractive-to-the-Right-Audience.jpg

By now, the Tide Pod Challenge has become mostly fodder for funny memes and jokes across cyberspace, but the truth is, children and teens across the country were all at risk because of it. Part of the issue that created this problem is how the product looked—both the pod and its packaging. While being meme-worthy could be an effective digital marketing vector in some regards, you do not want your brand associated with injuries and illnesses to customers because of the way your chemical product looks.

Adopt a Reasonable Look for Chemical Products

Consumers all over the world rely on various chemical products every day when they clean their homes, wash their clothes and dishes, and handle multiple household tasks. While you may want to develop an attractive product in an attractive package, you don’t necessarily want to make it too attractive or attractive in the wrong way.

Your chemical product should be designed in such a way that the average consumer can easily assume its intended use without seeing or reading the packaging and product information. However, the product information must include all the warnings and instructions necessary for a consumer to use the product safely and correctly. Part of the reason Tide Pods became a viral sensation was because they resembled gummy treats and teens knew they were dangerous, but wanted to do funny things for social media clout. Thus, the Tide Pod Challenge was created, leading to several hospitalizations and serious medical effects for those who attempted it.

Keep Your Chemical Products Functional and Safe

If your brand produces any chemical product, you want to design the product in a way that is not appealing to younger people. Do not make chemical products that resemble food or treats and stay away from bright colors whenever possible.

This effort should extend to the product packaging you use. Do not use vibrant color patterns and be sure to include all product safety information prominently on the package. Ideally, the average customers should be able to look at your product package and quickly and accurately identify its intended uses and potential risks. There are countless effective packaging methods available for your brand, and Century Label can help you take advantage of the labeling and packaging services that will work best for your products.

With more than 40 years of industry experience as professional labeling and packaging providers for consumer products, Century Label has a packaging design solution that will work for your chemical products. We can help you take your brand imagery and create something that will not become the next Tide Pod Challenge, so contact us today for more information about the product packaging and labeling services we offer.

5 Good Reasons to Use Pressure Sensitive Labels for Craft Beer

You’ve worked hard to develop the best-tasting beers possible to establish your craft beer brand—and you’re not alone. The craft beer industry is booming, comprising over 25% of the American beer market in 2019. With nearly 8,500 small and craft breweries scattered across the nation, you’ll need to stand out among this increasingly crowded market.

To do that, your labeling needs to represent your brand and draw the consumer’s eye. However, not just any label will do for a beverage product that frequently experiences cold temperatures, moisture, and other hazards before it ever lands in a retail cooler.

Fortunately, there’s an excellent labeling solution for craft beer—pressure sensitive labels.

Why Should You Use Pressure Sensitive Labels?

Unlike regular labels, which are pre-printed, cut, and glued to beer bottles, pressure-sensitive labels consist of three parts. First, there’s the face stock, which includes your imaging, then there’s a lining, and finally an adhesive back. This construction provides many benefits, including:

  1. Durability. Pressure sensitive labels are already much more durable than plain paper labels and are resistant to moisture, cold, and friction. For beer labels, you can add moisture-resistant varnish to provide further protection from damage when stored in cold, moist conditions.

  2. Customizability. Pressure sensitive labels can be printed using custom, full-color HD Flexo printing to provide the color-rich graphics that represent your brand. Also, you can add cold foil metallic imprints to ensure your brand stands out among others.

  3. Adaptability. For craft breweries with frequent changes in beer offerings due to seasonal beers, promotions, and more, pressure sensitive labels are the perfect choice. You can digitally print short runs of pressure sensitive labels, allowing you the freedom to test flavors, promos, and more.

  4. Professionalism. Paper labels often aren’t as richly colored as other labels; worse, they are susceptible to moisture and can easily peel off under stressful conditions. By contrast, richly colored, durable, pressure sensitive labels stay on the bottle and instantly appear professionally done, lending an aura of expertise and professionalism to your beer brand.

  5. Affordability. The vast majority of pressure sensitive labels are printed digitally, which requires a relatively short lead time and reduced labor to print. As a result, even short runs of pressure sensitive labels are affordable—and become even more inexpensive the more you print.

If you own a craft beer line and are thinking of ways to make your beers stand out from the vast number of other brewers on the market, your labeling choice could be one of your strongest selling points.

Some of the emerging trends of the craft beer market present attractive labeling opportunities. It’s a good idea to assess these trends and determine the best ways to leverage your labeling process to make your line of craft beers something exceptional.

1. New Beer Styles Are Gaining Popularity

Brewers across the nation are branching out from typical lagers and ales. They’re exploring new brewing styles to create fresh hop beers, Franconian-style rotbier, strong pale ales both juicy and hazy, contemporary Belgian-style gueuze lambic, and many others. If you’re thinking of going with a new beer that’s out of the ordinary, you should have a labeling solution to match. Think of ways to capture your new style of beer with a label that speaks to your brand and your creative vision for the brew.

2. Non-Alcoholic Beer Is Returning

The Brewers’ Association has noted that non-alcoholic beer is gaining popularity, and this presents a fantastic opportunity to any craft brewer thinking of ways to bolster their offerings. When it comes to labeling, it’s possible to create all types of label styles that help a non-alcoholic beer stand apart from the rest while still reflecting the brewer’s brand. Simple color changes can be enough to set these offerings apart from their alcoholic counterparts.

3. Americans Are Getting More Experimental

The cannabis industry has seen tremendous growth across the nation, and cannabis-infused beverages are just one example of how this industry is reshaping American consumption habits. Beer brewers have not only capitalized on this trend by crafting CBD-infused beers and specialty brews made with cannabis, but also other alternatives to typical beer. The craft beer industry has grown so expansive that even non-drinkers are taking an interest and looking for options to standard beers. The sheer number of possibilities opens a whole new world of labeling options, and a unique labeling solution can help an exclusive line of alternative beers stand out in surprising ways.

Have You Thought About Stock Pouching for Your Specialty Food Products?

Have-You-Thought-About-Stock-Pouching-for-Your-Specialty-Food-Products.jpg

Branding specialty food products can be a challenging undertaking. It’s essential to create not only a product package that is enticing and unique among all the competing products on the store shelf but also one that includes all required information. Stock pouches are an often overlooked but versatile and effective food product packaging option that can showcase a brand while tidily covering all the necessary information directly on the package.

What Are Stock Pouches?

As the name suggests, a stock pouch is simply a pouch package designed to contain a product. These flexible packaging options require minimal materials, provide customers with a clean and straightforward packaging look, and are endlessly customizable for branding and compliance purposes. They are also small and sleek, making packing, shipping, and shelf stocking easier all along the supply chain.

RELATED ARTICLE: Packaging: What Appeals to Customers

What’s Special about Stock Pouches?

When it comes to product packaging, brands must balance the need for stylish and functional packaging with the cost of creating their packaging. Brands that create and sell food products must be conscientious about their packaging choices, showcasing the products within while also inspiring confidence in customers that those products are safe and worth their money. Modern consumers also enjoy pouch packaging because they’re small, convenient, and easy to store.

Stock pouches are the ideal packaging for specialty foods such as dried fruits, nuts, snack mixes, individually wrapped candies, chocolates, and all types of foods. Snack branding is essential, and stock pouches from Century Label can help a food product brand stand out among the fierce competition present in the current market.

Endless Customization Options

Perhaps the best aspect of choosing stock pouches for specialty food products is the fact that this sort of packaging can be modified in all types of ways. For example, it’s possible to create branded stock pouches that feature tear-off tops with resealable closures underneath. It’s also possible to fashion plastic zipper closures or resealable adhesive tabs, each of which offers different benefits for different types of food products. Looking for a simple and effective way to add customization to your pouches? Applying custom printed labels to your stock pouches is an easy and economical method of personalizing your flexible packaging.

Affordable Packaging

Another significant aspect of stock pouches for food product packaging is the fact that this form of food product packaging is ideal for small runs. Wine Labels in the Digital Age: What You Should Know

Wine may be one of the oldest existing libations in the world, but the way it's packaged in the digital era certainly has changed a lot since its humble beginnings. While it used to be sold in handmade clay bottles, most wine these days looks very similar. In fact, the wine label is frequently the only thing a consumer has to go on when deciding which wine to purchase.

Whether you’re selling in brick-and-mortar locations or online, you'll want to be up to date with wine labels and the way they've evolved in the digital age.

Unique Labeling Drives Impulse Purchases

People make most purchases (up to 75%) on impulse, and eye-catching labels and packaging motivate a high percentage of those impulse buys. Imagine being near the wine aisle and feeling overwhelmed by the hundreds of bottles on the shelves. A well-designed label can get an on-the-fence consumer to pick up your bottle, rather than just walking past the aisle.

RELATED ARTICLE: Why Wine Makers Must Include Sulfite on Labels

A simple, readable design, unique colors, and even novel texture can give your wine the edge it needs to catch that attention.

Brand Recognition and Confidence

Unique labeling for your wine increases brand recognition and consumer confidence at the same time. It also communicates what your brand is about. Even in keeping to simple designs, there is a lot of room for creativity in your marketing to allow you to communicate that you're responding to the needs and wants of your customers.

You might consider hand-drawn, whimsical designs for certain demographics or sleek and professional designs for others. Useful information, such as pairing suggestions, also draws consumers to your product. If your wine has an interesting origin story, be sure to integrate that into your label's design.

RELATED ARTICLE: Packaging: What Appeals to Customers

Eco-friendly labeling is another option to seriously consider, as it also communicates to your customer base that you care about the environment and are doing your part. This will further credibility and confidence in your brand.

Take Full Advantage of Technology

Re-conceiving your labels also gives the added benefit of being able to take advantage of the new technology that millions of consumers use every day. The use of augmented reality (AR) in your labels allows consumers to interact virtually with your product before they even purchase it. They can scan the label to get a virtual tour of the vineyard, for example, or unlock other features. AR labels give you the power to curate an enormous amount of content associated with your brand and connect you more closely with your customers.

The Trickiness of Labeling Nutraceutical Bags

The aim of any nutraceutical company is to provide a product that’s not only food and nutrients but expertly crafted, medical-grade products designed to provide a specific benefit. As a result, it’s important to ensure nutraceutical packaging and labeling showcase the science behind the product’s creation and lend the manufacturer the credibility that’s deserved.

Unfortunately, many nutraceuticals are packaged, by necessity, in bags that can make traditional labeling techniques appear less than professional.

How can nutraceutical companies add branding and graphics to these bags without appearing second-rate? More importantly, what’s the best way to add required nutritional information in a sleek, professional manner? In most cases, the solution involves digital flexible packaging.

What Is Digital Flexible Packaging?

Digital flexible packaging combines two up and coming printing and labeling technologies – the digital printing process and a flexible bag or pouch. As mentioned, flexible packaging for nutraceuticals often consists of plastic pouches with a plastic zippered closure and tear-off heat seal. These pouches are FDA and USDA compliant, crucial for any packaging that will contain a nutraceutical.

Digital printing involves the use of a large, computerized printing press to perform a contactless printing process. A file containing a digital image can be transferred to the press via a computer, and printed on substrates of nearly any type, including the flexible plastic used to construct food-safe pouches. Using this method, the digital printer can cover the entire surface of the pouch.

RELATED ARTICLE: 7 Reasons to Consider Custom Printed Stand-Up Pouches

Why Digital Flexible Packaging?

Unlike traditional paper label printing, a digital printer can print on thin, flexible materials – allowing nutraceutical companies to add high-quality graphics to the plastic itself. This type of labeling appears much more high-end than most paper labels. As a result, nutraceutical companies can seize the authenticity and scientific look needed to lend credence to the product inside.

In addition, digital printing can be customized to suit nearly any application. Branding stays sleek, solid, and professional with vibrant imagery, sharp text, and remarkable contrast. No matter the artwork or type necessary, a digitally printed image on a custom flexible pouch is an ideal solution to ensure branded nutraceuticals don't appear cheap or generic.

RELATED ARTICLE: The Latest Trends in the Nutraceutical Market

Finally, choosing digital printing for flexible packaging allows for relatively quick lead times. There’s no need for plate setup or major shifts in production, and set up costs remain relatively low for each separate packaging design. As a result, digital printing is perfect for short to medium runs and allows superior flexibility when it comes to printing different packaging for seasonal items or alternative products.

What do Consumers Expect in a ‘Clean Label?’

What-Do-Consumers-Expect-in-a-Clean-Label.jpg

As Americans become more health-conscious, the term “clean label” is becoming more commonplace. A recent white paper on clean labeling found that a slim majority of consumers – around 60% – were familiar with the term “clean label,” and 44% stated that having a clean label was important to them.

In a general sense, a “clean label” is one that denotes a product that is free of artificial ingredients such as preservatives and additives such as flavors. However, in recent years, the definition of a clean label has become more nuanced. A common thread is clear, however. Of the 2100 consumers surveyed, over three quarters noted that a “clean label” denoted a healthier food.

So, what do consumers expect from their clean labeling? How can you make sure that your products align with what consumers are looking for?

Keep reading for answers...

Functional Foods, Notable Benefits

One of the main takeaways from the survey is that consumers seek clean labels because they desire foods and beverages that serve functional benefits. The 2019 Clean Label Report found that consumers are increasingly questioning a product’s certifications and health claims, so it won’t cut it to use unregulated terms like “natural.” Instead, consumers seek to understand the impact of a food on their overall health, backed by more rigorous certifications such as USDA Organic.

The Importance of Non-GMO Food is Declining

As recently as a few years ago, the non-GMO food movement was in full swing. More recently, however, the importance of having a non-GMO food label has declined. Consumers are shifting their focus to “real” ingredients that will improve their overall health. Particular points of interest include stress management, digestive health, and cognitive health. In fact, the term “made with real ingredients” on product labels rose 54% between 2016 and 2018, signaling a shift in consumer ethos from an interest in genetically modified to unprocessed, whole food ingredients.

Taste Remains Supreme

Finally, and perhaps unsurprisingly, consumers remain interested in how the food behind the label tastes. Whole food ingredients are important as they deliver functional benefits, but if a product doesn’t deliver taste, consumers are unlikely to try it again. Food producers are marrying taste and health by replacing processed sugars with low or no calorie alternatives such as monk fruit extract or naturally sweetening products with honey.

One thing is clear – the notion of a “clean label” product is and will continue to evolve. All product labelers should keep abreast of consumer consciousness to appeal to their tastes as they emerge.

3 Tips for Boosting Your Marketing Strategy with Custom Labels

3-Tips-for-Boosting-Your-Marketing-Strategy-with-Custom-Labels.jpg

Much of current research demonstrates the importance of labels when it comes to consumer choices. Why, then, would some business choose not to invest in high-quality, custom labels to draw consumers' attention? One major reason could be that they just haven't realized (yet) what a huge impact they can have on sales.

The following tips should be useful for those businesses still on the fence and for those already thinking about boosting their marketing strategy with custom labels.

1. Custom Labels Help Your Product Shine

Your product should be eye-catching, and you only have a matter of seconds to catch the average consumer's attention. The product label is likely the easiest aspect of your product to customize for these purposes. What makes your product different from others like it on the market? This question can be easily addressed with labeling. Use it to ensure your product stands out.

Readability is key in creating an enticing label. Bold lettering and bright colors automatically draw the eye, as does simple design. The goal is to hold your customer's attention for long enough to look at it in greater detail.

2. Increase Customer Engagement

Now that you have your customer's attention, it's important to persuade them to purchase your product over others. This is why it's so important to include information unique to your product on the labeling.  Is it made entirely from recycled materials? Does it have an interesting backstory? Is it a family recipe or tradition? These are the sorts of things that compel consumers to choose one brand over a competitor's.

Which unique identifying information to include in your label will also depend largely on the target demographic for your product. Is your demographic more likely to be persuaded by logic or emotions? Figuring that out will be a good guide toward choosing how to structure your label.

3. Shipping Label Upgrades

Just because you might not sell at a brick-and-mortar location, it doesn't mean you shouldn't pay attention to the entire design of your product as it's shipped to consumers. Having your brand appear in more than one place on your packaging also increases your brand recognition immediately, as opposed to plain cardboard packaging. Online retailers have a great opportunity with their shipping labels to increase their brand's recognition along with consumer confidence.

How to Comply with Pet Food Label Requirements

Labeling is one of the biggest challenges facing consumer product manufacturers, and food product labeling in particular can be incredibly challenging. Every type of food product manufacturer must meet all applicable labeling regulations from the Food and Drug Administration, and that includes companies that produce pet food products.

If your company manufactures any type of pet food, you need to ensure your labels meet the applicable labeling rules. Failing to do so can not only cause significant supply chain delays and ultimately harm your brand but also potentially harm your customers’ pets.

FDA Pet Food Labeling Regulations

Americans are very discerning when it comes to their pets, and it’s essential that your pet food products provide consumers with the information they need to make informed purchasing decisions. Many of the regulations that apply to pet food labels also apply to food products intended for human consumption, but you need to be a bit more specific in some ways when it comes to food and treats for pets.

RELATED ARTICLE: Packaging: What Appeals to Customers

The FDA requires that all pet food product labels include the following information:

  • A declaration of intended species. If your product is a dog treat, the label must indicate that it is intended only for dogs. In some cases, you may need to specify the breed or size of animal for which the product is intended.

  • Quantity. The label should clearly indicate the number of servings in the package, the weight of the package, and/or the number of individual treats in the package.

  • A guaranteed nutrition analysis. Quality and consistency are crucial in pet food production. Your label must include an accurate breakdown of the nutrients included in the product, such as crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, moisture content, and other nutrients if the product claims to be a significant source of those nutrients.

  • Ingredients list. Like any other food product, pet foods sold commercially must include a full list of all ingredients used in the creation of the product.

  • A statement of nutritional adequacy. These statements are sometimes optional, but it’s good practice to describe your product as a treat if it is intended as a treat, and the same applies to full meal servings and supplements.

  • Feeding directions. The pet food product label should include a breakdown of how to feed the product to the intended species, such as serving size by weight of the animal or at different stages of an animal’s life.

  • Manufacturer and/or distributor address and contact information. The label must allow consumers to contact the manufacturer and/or distributor with comments, complaints, or concerns. This information is also mandatory for traceability purposes.

The Future of the CBD Industry in the U.S. (and What It Means for Your Labels)

The-Future-of-the-CBD-Industry-in-the-US-and-What-It-Means-for-Your-Labels.jpg

Over the last few decades in the United States, consumers have seen a veritable explosion of health and wellness products hit the market. Everything from food and beverage products to organic remedies for common ailments and countless types of supplements have taken over the wellness industry. Additionally, the U.S. has also witnessed a dramatic shift in legislation surrounding cannabis and its derivative products such as cannabidiol (CBD).

Government Legislation and Labeling Regulations

Legislation surrounding cannabis and non-psychoactive products has relaxed to the point that many small business owners now exclusively focus on CBD products. The health and wellness market continues to balloon thanks to the high popularity of CBD products, and manufacturers need to know what’s coming and alter their strategies accordingly to take full advantage of this high demand.

While many state governments have embraced CBD legalization and some have even moved to fully decriminalize cannabis, other states are more hesitant to enact such changes. One constant across all states that allow the production, sale, and consumption of CBD products is labeling regulation. It is essential for customers to know exactly what each product contains, how to use it correctly, and what regulatory standards it meets. The label should include all of this information.

CBD product manufacturers must include very specific and accurate information about their products on their labels and packaging, and any missteps can easily lead to products pulled from store shelves, fines, and more. To futureproof your CBD product line, invest in a robust labeling solution that helps you meet your labeling requirements.

Keeping Your Labels Noticeable and Competitive

Another strategy you should enact to prepare for the changes coming to the CBD product industry is to keep your labels competitive and noticeable on store shelves. CBD products are popular with consumers, and the demand has encouraged many companies to start experimenting with CBD products. If you want to make a profit in this sector, you face a tremendous level of competition.

It’s more important than ever to develop an eye-catching label design that not only helps you establish brand power in a highly competitive market but also meets all applicable labeling regulations for the territories in which you plan to distribute and sell your products. This requires a significant amount of research and time investment, but it will pay off tremendously when you know your CBD product labels include all required information in a unique, attractive packaging design.

How Century Label Helped Three Clients Adjust to COVID-19

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread around the globe, it has left many niche businesses struggling in its wake. While the worst affected have had to close their doors completely, others have seized on some rather unique opportunities to pivot to another product or another sector entirely. The most successful of these have found a way to produce the products we need the most of during the pandemic.

Here’s a look at how three different Century Label clients recently adjusted their business models to produce hand sanitizer in the wake of COVID-19:

Creating Better Days

Primarily a creator of CBD-infused wellness products including oils, gummies, and tinctures, Creating Better Days adapted its business model to include a brand new company called APEX Offense. According to owner Taryn L. Nahm, “My 7-year-old daughter has cold-induced asthma, I was terrified of COVID affecting her lungs. If she got the virus, we would end up in the NICU. I desperately searched for hand sanitizer and was sickened at the price gouging.”

Along the way, however, Nahm found that her internal label printer was unable to meet the high demand and short timeline caused by these unique circumstances. Fortunately, Century Label was able to help; “The team at Century Label got us proofs within hours, we secured our order and got it within days. Their timeliness and efficiency were greatly appreciated. We were able to keep on our production schedule with their assistance—allowing us to produce more and quicker without any delays.”

Enfusia

While Enfusia was built to produce a range of bath and body products focused on the incorporation of essential oils, vitamins, and botanical extracts, it, too, pivoted to sanitizer production during COVID-19. “We are NSF-Certified and FDA registered, and we knew at some point the FDA would give waivers to companies like ours to assist in bridging the gap,” says Debra Myers of Enfusia. That gave the company the initial push to begin producing sanitizer and maintain production despite limitations in supplies caused by the surge in product demand.

Through the initial and continued challenges, Myers mentioned that the easiest part of her company’s pivot has been the branding and labeling of the new sanitizer product thanks to Century Label. “They have really been great, getting labels out the door so we can get products on the shelves. We've had a decades long relationship with Century Label, but it's in the tough times you know who your real suppliers are. They are right here with us!”

CK Products

As a large distributor and manufacturer of cake decorating, candy making, and kitchen tools and accessories, CK Products hardly seems like an ideal company to make the pivot to medical-grade sanitizers. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, that’s exactly what CK Products did. According to John Steadman, “The current economy created capacity in our production schedule. CK wanted to retain employees and fill a need that would help fight the spread of COVID-19.”

The transition needed to be rapid to address diminishing sanitizer supplies. “In just a few weeks we had secured supply of the main ingredients, created packaging, and brought on new customers.” He attributes much of the quick turnaround to Century Label’s speedy labeling process: “Century Label helped CK by getting our label orders first in line so we could keep moving quickly.”

How Being a Leader in Labels Just Became an Essential Business

How-Being-a-Leader-in-Labels-Just-Became-an-Essential-Business.jpg

While most of us haven't yet begun to imagine the ways in which our world will change in the days after the COVID-19 pandemic, one thing is for certain: nothing will ever seem the same afterwards. While many businesses are experiencing shutdowns during this global crisis, Century Label is fortunate enough to be able to step up in a leadership role and aid in this battle against the novel coronavirus. In fact, the increased and desperate need for hand sanitizers and disinfectants means that our FDA and EPA-compliant labels are more crucial now than ever before.

Hand Sanitizer

While hand sanitizer used to be primarily a tool of medical professionals, its use has been steadily on the rise in use for the last 10 years. Today, in light of this global pandemic, we see a very different picture altogether. The first week of March, after news of COVID-19 hit the general public in full force, saw a 470% increase in hand sanitizer sales compared to the previous year.

Both the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have recommended high-alcohol-content hand sanitizers of more than 60% alcohol as an alternative to handwashing when soap and water are not available. It is one of the most effective ways to kill the virus and avoid its spread. Ensuring proper labeling of alcohol content is crucial to the fight against this virus.

While most of us in the United State have on-demand access to soap and hot water, there are many circumstances where we may need a hand sanitizer alternative. Here are some of the top reasons that we see such a need for increase in hand sanitizer use in the COVID-19 era:

  • Essential workers who don't have time to wash hands while doing their jobs

  • When shopping for essentials

  • During worship

  • In our vehicles

  • On public transportation

With so many stores in our communities experiencing shortages of this life-saving product, the ramping up of the production of hand sanitizers is essential in keeping us all safe.

Hard Surface Disinfectants

Hard surface disinfectants are another important weapon against COVID-19, and not just in hospitals and grocery stores, but in our homes, as well. Studies of the virus have shown that it can live on some hard surfaces, not just for hours, but days.

For this reason, both the WHO and the CDC recommend that disinfecting countertops, tables, doorknobs, handles, and floors become paramount, as part of our daily routine now. Fortunately, with proper disinfectants, the coronavirus is easy to kill.

Packaging: What Appeals to Customers

Packaging-What-Appeals-to-Customers.jpg

Virtually every product on the market utilizes some type of packaging, and it’s this packaging that provides one of the simplest forms of marketing available. While some may see packaging as simply a way of containing and transporting a product, it’s also an important marketing tool that can boost a business’s success.

Packaging Matters

The packaging for any product can be a customer’s first impression for that brand. Consumers will often make snap decisions based on these first impressions, affected by subconscious decision-making processes. It’s not only important to use effective packaging that efficiently transports your products but also to have packaging that appeals to what your consumers want – while spreading your brand message.

What Consumers Want in Packaging

Certain aspects of packaging design will depend on the product and can vary widely between different industries, but, usually, consumers look for some general qualities in packaging design. These qualities can guide your decisions when choosing packaging for your products.

  • Simplicity: Product packaging can be overly complicated or overwhelming with color, design and information. Often, simplicity is preferred and can be far more eye-catching than more complicated designs. Packaging that is clean and clear can provide concise product information and create a sense of calm, drawing in the consumer.

  • Branding: Packaging should not only define a product but represent the entire brand, tying the product into the larger product line and presenting a unified appearance that the consumer will identify with.

  • Color: Color affects our buying decisions all the time, often subconsciously. Colors used on all packaging materials should be carefully chosen for the mood and image the product wants to project. For example, red and yellow are often used to stimulate hunger cues and green usually denotes health and is used on many natural products.

  • Eco-friendliness: Increasingly, consumers are aware of sustainability issues and seek out products and packaging that are more environmentally friendly. This includes packaging that is made from recycled materials, those that are easy to re-use or recycle, and anything that reduces the impact on the environment.

  • Nostalgia: Consumers respond well to the emotional appeal of a retro look. Utilizing nostalgic references in a design immediately evokes memories and familiarity, which entices the consumer to buy.

  • Interactive Packaging: Packaging that is useful in additional ways, other than simply holding a product — think re-sealable bags for snack products — is more appealing to consumers.
